RE: Just pulled into Camp Hatteras!

Manganos "If you are looking for a real nice place to eat I recommend Bass Night LoneCedar. I believe it is owned by the govenor of NC and has EXCELLENT food." Marc Basnight isn't governor - yet. He's President Pro Tem of our State Senate and does run a fine restaurant. Hope you continue to enjoy your stay with us. You might consider taking in the "Lost Colony" play or at least a visit to the theater and Fort Raleigh Historic Site if you haven't yet done so. Al

RE: OBX CELL PHONE SERVICE

US Cellular is good from Nags Head to Ocracoke - It even worked on Portsmouth Island on Cape Lookout NS.

RE: Are you camping this weekend and where?

Thursday and Friday at the NPS Pisgah campground on the Blue Ridge Parkway. May also be there Sat but hope to find a decent place to boondock in Pisgah or Nantahala NF instead. Sure hope its cooler than what we've seen down here in the flatlands. Happy 4th to all and be safe - Al

RE: Uwharrie service roads

You won't have any trouble getting to one of the developed campgrounds but it sounds like you're looking for a dispersed site. If so, I'd recommend dropping the trailer and scouting ahead or at least checking with one of the rangers especially if we get any rain this week. You may already have this but just in case here's a link to the road and trail system http://www.cs.unca.edu/nfsnc/recreation/uwharrie/index.htm Unless you're arriving Wednesday or Thursday at the latest I think you may have a problem finding a site (developed or dispersed) as Uwharrie is generally overflowing on a holiday weekend. We camped there last year over the 4th and I don't recall seeing any open spots. Give the office a call to get some idea of what your chances might be. Have a save and enjoyable Fourth - Al

RE: Outer Banks

Can't get closer to the ocean then that. Uh, actually some folks can - Portsmouth Island, Cape Lookout OBX but again, they don't have full hookups as requested by the original poster. Thats us in the tent. http://i138.photobucket.com/albums/q278/huachuca/PI-0508/IMG_0650.jpg?t=1214427620 http://i138.photobucket.com/albums/q278/huachuca/PI-0508/IMG_0652.jpg?t=1214427734 http://i138.photobucket.com/albums/q278/huachuca/PI-0508/IMG_0637.jpg?t=1214428001

RE: Maybe going to the OBX, NC

Frisco Woods is on the sound side. If you're looking for a campground with hookups, I'd put it behind Ocean Waves, then Camp Hatteras then KOA. I've stayed there and its not bad but, if you don't require hookups, I'd recommend the National Park Service campground at Frisco over any other on the OBX. As a rule, the sites are much larger and offer considerably more privacy. Al

RE: What would you tow with a Toyota Tacoma 4x4???

Hi Julie. Another vote for the molded fiberglass genre - Bigfoot, Casita, Escape, Oliver, Scamp & others. Some are no longer in business but their products are still around - we camped near a 70 something Trillium this weekend. In the past five years, we've covered over 50K miles and spent 200+ nights in our 02 16' Scamp with much of the towing done by my wife's 05 Tacoma 4WD Double Cab. Although the fuel economy could be a little better (14-16 mpg when towing), its a great combination. What type of camping do you think you'll be doing - RV parks with full hookups or more rustic campgrounds such as those found on government lands? For us, the 16' Scamp is about the right size - with all our gear, it'll push 3K lbs. Its the side bath model with front bunks as our daughter camped with us until she got to college. Now that she no longer cares to go with us, we're looking for a front bath / side dinette model. I'd recommend that floor plan to any single or couple thinking of purchasing one of these. Good luck in your search and let us know what you end up with. Al & Cindy

RE: Edisto Beach State Park

Come on up and visit our State Parks in NC. Some folks (not me) complain because the gates are locked each evening and not opened again until seven the next AM. No one allowed in or out except in the event of an emergency. I kind of like the fact that you don't have folks driving through the campground late at night. Al

RE: Cachuma Lake, CA -This past weekend's trip!

Enjoyed the photos - thanks for posting. Thats a great looking camping spot. The trees look like the live oaks we have here on the NC coast - am I close? Al

RE: small light weight tt

....I thought that most of the fiberglass eggs had casette toilets? From a fair amount of personal experience and much more internet dialog with other molded fiberglass owners I'd say most of the late model 16 & 17 ft Scamps and Casistas have full baths with toilets and showers although that percentage drops sharply with the 13'ers. Definitely no excess room in there but at 6'3" and the wrong side of 250 I can manage in our 16' side bath Scamp. Al

RE: small light weight tt

Possibly a little smaller than you're looking for but we have a 16' Scamp with flush john, shower and tanks and really like it. Sleeps two comfortably and two more in a pinch. With genset and all our gear it weighs in a bit less than 3K. There's a picture of it in the generator thread of the small trailer forum. Al

Sunrise - Memorial Day

Taken from just outside our tent on Portsmouth Island (Cape Lookout National Seashore - NC Outer Banks) http://i138.photobucket.com/albums/q278/huachuca/PI-0508/IMG_0663.jpg?t=1213018264 PI is a great destination for those who enjoy rustic camping. There are no services of any type on the island, just twenty plus miles of unspoiled beach where you can set up most anywhere. Camping is free but there is a $14/person round trip charge for the ferry service. It was fairly crowded over Memorial Day and our nearest neighbor was still a half mile or so away.

RE: Generators

Another vote for the Honda 3000. Ours is permanently (more or less) mounted on a platform I built over the tongue so the extra weight isn't an issue. Its served us well for three plus years now with most of our camping being on public lands. A couple of advantages of the larger size - Electic start, larger fuel tank (easily lasts all night) and runs our small AC in econo mode (quieter). http://i138.photobucket.com/albums/q278/huachuca/PI-0508/Horse_Cove_0907023_1.jpg?t=1213099469 Horse Cove Campsite - Nantahala National Forest

RE: So far we will see Carlsbad NM, Santa Fe and Durano .

If its open, Sitting Bull Falls in Lincoln National Forest (30 miles or so from Carlsbad). http://www.fs.fed.us/r3/lincoln/recreation/caves.shtml This area was closed May 1 due to high fire danger. The drive from Carlsbad to Dog Canyon in Guadalupe National Park (fifty miles one way) has some great scenery with interesting spur roads. If you can handle rustic camping (flush johns - no showers), the NPS campground at Dog Canyon is a great stop. Gary Carver is the ranger there and can off useful tips on hikes & local points of interest. Have fun, sounds like a wonderful trip - Al

Signed the petition and best of luck to you with this. We're going through a similar battle here in the east with beach closures on Cape Hatteras National Seashore. Al

RE: Looking for someplace within 1.5 hours of Greensboro NC

Hagan-Stone is a Greensboro City Park with decent camping facilities. Trails, exhibits, lake with paddle boats and access to a nearby swimming pool. http://www.greensboro-nc.gov/Departments/Parks/facilities/regionalparks/haganstone/ Another option is Morrow Mountain State Park. No hookups but a great park. http://ncparks.gov/Visit/parks/momo/main.php Have fun

RE: Battery power box?

I just found out that our local walmart sells these for $148 CDN. EasternTool Generator While I'm not familiar with the brand/model you've listed, I have been around two cycle generators when they were in use. Unless you're boondocking alone and don't have an aversion to weedeater level noise, this probably isn't a good idea. I'm not opposed to gensets and actually own four of them but only the high dollar Honda is a candidate for camping. We've actually had favorable experiences with the battery packs and inverters for running a fan at night. I'm not sure of the battery specs but the fan is a $20 oscillating floor model we picked up at WalMart several years ago when camping in the Keys. The two of them will easily get us through an eight hour night and we recharge them from our vehicle when driving around during the day. Over Memorial Day we'll be tent camping on Portsmouth Island (Cape Lookout National Seashore) where I'm sure we'll need some air movement. I'll try to remember to get the specs and run time details and post back here. Al

RE: Northern NM boondocking

The campgrounds in this link aren't (my opinion) true boondocking but may serve as a known base when exploring for more suitable spots http://www.forestcamping.com/dow/southwst/safe.htm We did find some great sites in Lincoln NF back in March although I think its closed to camping right now due to the fire danger. If you get down that way, be sure to visit Sitting Bull Falls and hike some of the trails there. Also found Dog Canyon in Guadalupe Mountains NP to be a good stopover in that area. When camping in NFs here in the south, I'll pick up a FS map (<$5) at one of the ranger stations or visitor centers and ask the staff for recommendations. Al
